Recent Plein Air Days

This old barn has been on my short list of scenes to paint. Like many old barns, you never know how long they will be standing. It was Super Bowl Sunday and a perfect day to paint. The winter sun created strong shadows and the beautiful rusting metal roof added a warm contrast.

Plein air painting along Highway 41 in Madera County offers an excellent view of the old ranchos, expansive landscapes and ancient geology. Fellow plein air painters can relate to how it is a challenge keeping the bugs and dirt from flying into the wet paint, as cars sail by at what feels like 100 MPH. I am planning to return to this spot for a sunset painting in the near future.

Yosemite - Bridal Veil Falls, and a thumbnail of Half Dome in the background
As you can see by the big 'half dome' of blue sky, a recent trip to Yosemite, met with perfect weather.  After a full day of painting, keeping my eyes open during the evening meal, was a true test of endurance. I was rewarded with a rather unusual event, at this particular fall. In the spring months, just before sunset, the sun fires through the water spray, and creates a stunning prism of color, that changes in both intensity and range of color.

Best regards to all of you out there. Greatly appreciate your emails. Wishing you a great spring and summer!
